Inform your bank with a letter or in person that you are going to USA for work or business, and that you are going to earn money there. The bank may have certain obligations to convert your accounts to NRO or similar types in order to comply with the FERA regulations. Find out details about:

  Getting Cash/Dollar/ Travelers check  [top]  
 
  1. Buy some dollars depending upon your needs. This will help you for any telephone calls, tips, quick snack or for other little emergencies. Get some change - 25¢(quarter), 10¢(dime), 5¢ (nickel). Some sources of foreign exchange are banks, travel agents and foreign currency dealers.
  2. Arrange for traveler's Checks since they are safer and convenient for travel. If these are lost or stolen, they can be replaced with ease and without much tension. However, make sure that you note down the numbers on the checks in a separate place.

  1. It is very important and useful for you to learn driving and get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Having an IDP will make it easier to get a US driving license since some states may allow you to skip a few driving tests.
  2. Get the medical insurance taken care of unless you are covered for medical insurance by the employer. If you fall sick or if you get into a situation where you need some medical assistance, it is very expensive in USA!

  1. Just to be on the safer side and be physically fit get a general health checkup. Tell your doctor that you are going abroad and get all the required checkups. Get medicines for common ailments. If you need a prescription, ask your doctor to prescribe a generic name of the medicine. So that it will be easy to refill your prescription.
  2. Also see a Dentist and Optometrist. If you have prescription glasses, get an extra pair.
     
  3. Write down contact numbers with area code (Home, Work, Cell, Pager), postal address and e-mail address of all the persons you know in the US.

  1. Leave a copy of your itinerary with family or friends at home in case they need to contact you in an emergency.
  2. Make two photocopies of your passport identification page, airline tickets, driver's license and the credit cards that you plan to bring with you. Leave one photocopy of this data with family or friends at home; pack the other in a place separate from where you carry your valuables.
  3. Leave a copy of the serial numbers of your travelers checks with a friend or relative at home. Carry your copy with you in a separate place and, as you cash the checks, cross them off the list.
