Your social security number is a unique identification. As a lawfully admitted alien with  INS permission to work in the U.S., you need a Social Security number. If you don't have a valid work visa (like H1 and you are a dependent), you cannot get an SSN. To claim tax benefits you can apply/get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). To obtain a TIN, you must complete IRS Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
